Book Review: Horse Crazy! 1,001 Fun Facts … for Horse-Loving Kids
Horse Crazy! 1,001 Fun Facts, Craft Projects, Games, Activities, and Know-How for Horse-Loving Kids (Storey Publishing, $16.95) by Jessie Haas is a virtual gold mine of material that will fascinate not only young horse lovers but adults as well.
Divided into three main sections, the book opens with “In the Know: Essential Equine Education for the Truly Obsessed.” Here you’ll discover a wide range of horse-related information, including how to make a horseshoe-shaped picture frame, how to use a clicker to train your horse, and how to recognize potential equine health problems. In addition, you’ll find facts about mythical horses of the sun, a list of horse colors, and a recipe for making digestive cakes for your steed.
The next section, “In the Saddle (and in the Stall and in the Show Ring …),” is filled with directions on how to correctly halter a horse, braid a mane, set up your own horse show, and much more.
You’ll discover all sorts of fun things to do in the third section of the book, called “In the Spotlight: The Arts, the Environment, and Some Equine Extras.” There’s a guide for writing horse stories and drawing horses as well as information on how to crochet a saddle pad or halter. You can also learn how to calculate your carbon hoofprint!
The book ends with a much smaller section called “The Tail End.” This is where you’ll find additional resources, such as the addresses and Web sites of breed associations, riding organizations or horse-adoption organizations.
This nicely illustrated book will keep any reader busy for days — if not weeks or months. Keep it in mind for that horse-crazy person on your holiday shopping list because this would be a thoughtful and much-appreciated gift.
