Book Reviews: Here Comes Santa, Stuck on Christmas! and Deck the Halls
by Bob Walsh
A new pop-up book from David Pelham, Here Comes Santa (Little Simon; $11.99) is the perfect stocking stuffer for either a young child or an adult who collects these ingenious books.
This mini-book features a festive Christmas wreath, Santa’s workshop, an evergreen tree frosted with snow, Santa’s sleigh, an intricate village scene, a teddy bear popping out of a gaily wrapped box and Santa himself on the final page.
The remarkable paper engineering of this little volume offers ample proof why Pelham has received numerous awards in both the U.S. and England for his innovative work. Here Comes Santa will be a holiday treasure you’ll want to share with family and friends over and over again in the years to come.
Stuck on Christmas! (Simon Scribbles; $12.99) by Siobhan Ciminera contains more than 700 stickers that youngsters can use to create decorations for the Christmas tree or to place on special pages in the activity book.
Trim the tree in the book, use the alphabet stickers to fill in the missing letters of popular Christmas songs, maintain the 12 Days of Christmas chart, or make your own paper snowman — these and many other activities will keep your child or grandchild occupied in the days heading up to Dec. 25.
From creating winter scenes with animals to fashioning Christmas cards, there are all sorts of creative things you and your youngster can do with these stickers. Just remember — this is not an appropriate book for children who might be tempted to put the stickers where they do not belong: in their mouths!
Deck the Halls (Atheneum; $16.99) combines the artwork of Norman Rockwell with the lyrics of the popular Christmas song. A dozen full-page color reproductions of the artist’s famous paintings make this a special volume that adults and children will enjoy.
Capturing the festive air of a bygone age, the illustrator’s evocative work is as pleasing to the eye today as it was over 50 years ago when most of these holiday pieces appeared on the covers of some of the nation’s most important magazines.
