Car Care Tips

by Bob Kay

How often should you change your car’s oil? That sounds like a simple question, but there are a number of variables that come into play when providing an answer.

The most frequently asked question I get when folks are purchasing a vehicle from me is, “Do I need to change the oil right now?” When you buy a used vehicle, it’s a good idea to change the oil and other fluids as soon you purchase the car so that you know when they were last changed. You can then start a record of maintance on the car.

Oil change intervals depend on the type of oil you use — conventional or synthetic — and your driving habits. Most vehicles use conventional oil and you should have the oil changed every three months or 4,000 miles. Conventional oil breaks down under heat and isn’t as durable as synthetic oil, but it’s also not as expensive.

Synthetic oil is used in many imports, but nowadays it can be used in any vehicle. Synthetic oil is more expensive and in some cases you may need a special oil filter to accompany the type of synthetic you’ve chosen. The great thing about synthetic oil is that you don’t need to change the oil as frequently.

Generally, changing synthetic oil at 8,000-mile or one-year intervals is safe. Many manufacturers suggest 10,000-mile intervals, but in my opinion you can never change oil too often.

Synthetic oil will hold up better in extreme weather, hot or cold, and will reduce the friction in your engine because it’s so slick. Reduction in friction will reward you with an increase in engine longevity and fewer repairs, whether it’s a new vehicle or an old classic like my ’61 Corvette.

Of course, consult with your current repair shop and see what the people there recommend based on your driving habits and type of vehicle you have.
