Coastside Contractor Discovered Lifelong Passion at an Early Age
Not many people discover their passion when they are only a student in junior high school, but that is exactly what Bryan Bodas did. After taking a woodshop class, he discovered that woodworking was his calling. With a career that spans 25 years, Bodas is an extremely talented general contractor, serving clients along the coast and on the peninsula. After living on the South Coast, Bodas settled in Half Moon Bay, where he runs his own full-service residential construction company.
I was able to catch up with Bodas over a cup of coffee to ask him about his career.
Q: How did you get your start?
A: After high school, I began working in my shop teacher’s cabinet-making business. He was an important mentor to me, giving me the guidance that helped me develop my craftsmanship. I went on to work on large commercial projects before deciding to go out on my own as a general contractor.
Q: What types of projects do you do?
A: I have experience with new construction, remodels, decks and siding. My specialties are kitchens, bathrooms and interior remodels. I enjoy taking something that doesn’t work and making it work for the owners. Tastes change, styles change, and now people want more open space within their homes.
Q: What kinds of projects do you like the most?
A: While you have to do the normal things, the challenging projects are the most fun for me. I enjoy figuring out how the puzzle pieces fit. Kitchens are a good example. There are so many different parts and pieces that must be considered. Often, I rework a kitchen to create a new flow that makes it work well.
Q: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: I like working with people as much as the building. I also really enjoy when my handiwork is appreciated.
Q: What are some of the projects that have been memorable for you?
A: Volunteer projects. I really enjoy doing them, because the work is needed and greatly appreciated. I was very involved in several projects that involved renovations at the La Honda Elementary School and the Pescadero High School.
Q: What is your business philosophy?
A: Be honest; do honest work. It is important to do things the right way. You have to be trustworthy. Even if something goes wrong, you need to be there to handle the situation. Clients always appreciate working with someone who has integrity.
Q: In the past, your company was a partnership. What is different about running a company on your own?
A: Everything comes down to me. You don’t have someone to turn to while searching for the answer. It is good, because you can’t wait around; you are pushed to find the answers that much faster.
Q: What advice do you have for people looking to build or remodel their homes?
A: Hire the right contractor. You need your contractor to have both skill and integrity. Look at examples of work they have done, and check references.
