Pescadero Bed and Biscuit: A Coastside bargain

Can you think of any bed and breakfast place in the Bay Area that is $125 a night? You can get a room in a cheap motel for that price these days — but a B & B? In today’s economy, a lot of people are no longer taking vacations to Europe, Hawaii or even Mexico. So, it is more important then ever to find a bargain, and the Pescadero Bed and Biscuit is a real bargain. You must be saying to yourself, for only $125 a night there must be something sketchy about it. You would be wrong.
The Bed and Biscuit consists of two “rustic but elegant” cottages whose interiors were refurbished with redwood and recycled materials. The counter tops are recycled granite and, in the smaller cottage, 100-year-old redwood from the original farmhouse.
One cottage is 600 square feet and has beautiful attention to detail, from the stained glass window over the claw-foot bathtub to the sunburst of wood over the bed. Light and airy, the cottage has three French doors, skylights and many windows that overlook the pastoral 6-acre property. It also has a full kitchen with china and a breakfast bar that seats four, a living room with a futon that opens into a full-sized bed, a TV with movies, a music system with CDs, and a separate bedroom with a queen-sized bed. It rents for $160 on weekends, Friday through Sunday nights, and $150 during the week, Monday through Thursday.
The second cottage, right across the courtyard, is 350 square feet. It has a cozy, beautifully appointed bedroom and a “kitchenette” with a microwave, fridge, hot plate, portable convection oven and a beautiful bathroom with another claw foot tub. It rents for $135 on weekends and $125 on weeknights.
Neither cottage requires a 2-night stay, and you get a price break if you stay more than three nights. The fenced garden area has plenty of outdoor seating and this B & B is “pet friendly.” Breakfast is provided, though you have to cook it yourself. The innkeeper likes for her guests to have complete privacy. When my husband and I stayed there for our 25th anniversary, there were eggs, sausage, tomatoes, fresh fruit, juice, coffee beans and more in the fridge. There are nice little touches in both cottages like fresh flowers, feather beds and high-thread-count linens, which are gently steamed in lavender water, and a lavender sprig on the pillows.
The Pescadero Bed and Biscuit opened its doors in February 2009. Innkeeper Peggy Walker says, “The best thing about opening the B & B is the people I have met. My first guests were from France. They were going to camp at Memorial Park just down the road, but it was late and the park was already closed. They were two sisters and their husbands heading for Encinada. We ended up sharing omelets and a bottle of wine, and I still correspond with them.”
She says, “My goal is to provide a sanctuary for my guests. I want families to be able to go on vacation and afford it, especially in these tough economic times. I get a lot of people from the Bay Area. It is close enough that guests can come down for a night or two and just breathe the fresh sea air and sleep peacefully. They can go down to the creek or sit in the sun. I had one group recently who meet somewhere once each year. They flew in from Munich, Washington, Colorado — and the closest one from Santa Barbara — to vacation together.”
Walker, an ordained minister, says she also performs weddings and wedding receptions. She says, “The price for weddings and receptions is very reasonable because I like to promote young love … old love, too.” She adds, “It is important to support South Coast businesses for these events. … We always refer our guests to the many wonderful businesses right here in Pescadero.”
Our stay was magical and peaceful. Flipping through the guest book, I saw others felt the same way. “It makes me happy to spread a little happiness,” Walker says with a smile.
