Pescadero Creek Inn Winemaking

Winemaking at Pescadero Creek Inn

Located in Pescadero, just south of Half Moon Bay, is an 1898 farmhouse turned quaint bed & breakfast with rooms that are all unique and different. The main house rooms have 12 foot ceilings and claw foot tubs while the cottage has a fireplace in the sitting room and a private deck overlooking a creek. But the real hidden treasure of this bed & breakfast is the wine they make. The owner Ken Donnelly purchases the grapes from Napa, Sonoma and nearby Santa Cruz vintners crushes them and ages the wine oak barrels. Guests who stay at the inn are treated to a rotating selection of white and red wines. 393 Stage Road, Pescadero, 888-307-1898, www.pescaderocreekinn.com.

San Benito House in Half Moon Bay

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

1. What makes your B&B special?

The San Benito House is the most historic inn in downtown Half Moon Bay, and our turn-of-the-century guest rooms are incredibly charming and unique. Established in 1905 San Benito House was originally named The Mosconi Hotel, a moderately-priced hostelry for visitors to the Coast side. In 1979 after extensive restoration and remodeling, it re-opened for business as a bed and breakfast inn, the first of such an establishment in the area. The San Benito Deli is widely known for it’s famous sandwiches on fresh baked old world bread.

2. What do you serve for breakfast?

We serve a continental breakfast of cereal, muffins, hard boiled eggs, juice, coffee, tea, and fruit.

3. Can you tell us a bit about yourselves, the owners/managers?

The Carrubba family owns and operates the San Benito House. We pride ourselves in giving our guests the best possible value for their stay. We also have an award-winning deli in the hotel, as well as a full bar and restaurant which is open all day.

Point Montara Lighthouse & Hostel

This lighthouse is the shortest lighthouse on the coast, but it’s a valuable tool for navigation along the coast. High on a hill above the sea, Point Montara has been operating since 1875.

Today the fog signal has been replaced by an off shore signal, a white flash every five seconds. The old Fog Signal Annex was converted into a meeting facility. Remodled Victorian buildings serve as a hostel with 36 dorm beds, 5 private rooms and guest kitchens. There is an espresso bar at the reception desk and free Wi-Fi is available.

Hiking and biking trails are accessible and Gray Whales migrate off the coast between December and April. The Point Montara Lighthouse is open from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It is located at 16th Street and Highway 1 in Montara, CA. (Look for the “Hostel” sign.) Call them directly at 650-728-7177 or on-line at www.norcalhostels.org.
