As literary director of the Fine Arts Galleria at the San Mateo County Fair, I am thrilled with our first published anthology. Joanne Shwed, from Backspace Ink, volunteered to create the cover design for Carry the Light, and it is absolutely stunning. Joanne is the epitome of what we hope for in a Carry the Light volunteer: the willingness to step up and lend a hand to help others find their own creative spirit. As you can imagine, putting together a 300 page book in just a few weeks was a daunting task, one in which Joanne accomplished in record time.
Her husband, Thomas Ekkens, won our book cover art contest with his magical photo, Light Fall – the perfect artistic interpretation of our theme. This is one productive couple! Look for Joanne’s essays and Tom’s poems in Carry the Light, what we believe is the first published collection of a county fair’s contest submissions. Tom’s other contest win is his photo Fissure, which will grace the cover of Fault Zone: Over the Edge, the 3rd annual anthology of stories edited by the San Francisco/Peninsula branch of the California Writers Club (CWC), to be published in late fall, 2012 by Sand Hill Review Press.
I’m sure Joanne and Tom will once again submit their creative work and considerable energy to the 2013 San Mateo County Fair!
