Jazz-funk fusion is the genre that Donny McCaslin specializes in and his emotionally charged solos turn heads.
McCaslin was born in Santa Cruz and trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2004 he worked with the Maria Schneider Orchestra which led to a 2004 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
His current jazz-funk fusion CD, Perpetual Motion will be available at the Douglas Beach House. In a review of the CD, Scott Corbin of Downbeat Magazine calls McCaslin “…an excitable tenor. He expresses his excitation not by means of volatility or force, rarely in screaming-peaking arcs, but as an irrepressible outpouring of ideas, sometimes flowing with such force that they seem to back up, tripping on each other, then gushing forth giddily.”
McCaslin’s youthful enthusiasm will be appreciated at this special performance.
