Long time Coastside photographer Randie Marlow won Best of Show in Color Photography at the 2013 San Mateo County Fair. Marlow entered 11 images in 12 categories that won her eight ribbons.

Another First Place entry was “Hidden Cave” for the Landscape Color Photography Category.

Marlow also won First and Second Place for her entries in San Mateo County’s Silicon Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Publicity Photo Contest.

First Place photo for the Bayside was “Afternoon at Filolis.” Second Place for a Coastside photo was “White Sail” taken in Princeton-by-the-Sea.

This was Marlow’s first time entering the “Carry the Light” Book Cover contest. “Eucalyptus Light” won Second Place and is featured on the back cover of the Literary Arts Anthology which is in its second year of publication. “Carry the Light” is available on Amazon.com.

She also took home three Honorable Mentions at this year’s fair, one called “Walk On” (Spiritual Category), another called “Peacock” (Birds Category) and the third photo called “Bernie with Daisies” entered in the Domestic Animals Category.

Jose-Luis Orozco is coming to Half Moon Bay’s middle school. Join beloved children’s singer/songwriter in a bilingual sing-along that will delight the entire family. The Coastside event is May 24, 2013 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Cunha middle school multi-use room.

Jose-Luis Orozco has written three award winning books, De Colores and Other Latin American Folk Songs for Children (Dutton 1994), Diez Deditos — Ten Little Fingers (Dutton 1997), and Fiestas (Dutton 2002). Orozco recorded 13 volumes of Lírica Infantil, Latin American Children’s Music and his songs have been taught by two generations of teachers.

Now I know why I’ve always loved the tradition of dancing around a maypole. The celebration originated with the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.

An ancient Gaelic festival marked the beginning of summer as May 1, which is the midpoint of the sun crossing between the spring equinox and summer solstice.

No matter in which country May Day is celebrated, there are always flowers. The two most popular traditions I found are hanging spring flowers on a neighbor’s door and decorating a pole with streamers and flowers. Here is a fun May Pole project to do with children.

No matter how you celebrate spring, be sure to include plenty of flowers. They brighten spirits around the globe.

We live at Pillar Ridge, right next to Half Moon Bay Airport, making it very convenient for us to walk to the famed Dream Machines. My experiences are through the viewfinder of my Canon 5D. I can’t imagine how many hours the machine exhibitors, lovingly polish and baby their motor creations. I have to say — I’ve always had a love for fast cars, particularly drag racers dating back to the 60s. As many of you know I also have a passion for really fast race-style motorcycles. I’m strictly a spectator — we do not volunteer or promote this Coastside event.

Most people these days have pretty nice digital cameras and they shoot cool photos, so to be a little different, I’m looking for details and images that capture odd angles. Airplanes … the airplanes are out of this world. I like to attempt to capture their sleek functional lines. The engineering of an airplane has to be perfect. I believe an airplane is a “perfect” machine. It’s designed with as close to “0″ drag as possible … and it “flies” which is amazing.
