New Leaf’s Coastal Kale Salad Recipe

Friday, July 15th, 2011

by Gwen O’Neil

I have absolutely fallen in love with this salad at New Leaf. Because it’s so chewy, it takes a long time to finish each mouthful and creates a satisfying light meal.

A friend brought the salad to a pot luck party in El Granada and told us she had been given the recipe at the deli department. I made a point to go to New Leaf soon after that.

If you love crunchy raw veggies, you will enjoy this very much. (more…)

Four Shillings Short in Half Moon Bay January 3, 2011

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

December 16, 2010 – Half Moon Bay, CA The Coastside Children’s Programs will be hosting the Four Shillings Short at their center on site at El Granada Elementary School on January 3, 2011 from 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. – open to all families (please RSVP with nicole@coastsidechildren.org or at 650-712-7415).

Four Shillings Short, the husband-wife duo of Aodh Og O’Tuama, from Cork, Ireland and Christy Martin, from San Diego, California, have been touring in the United States and Ireland since 1997. Because of the vast array of musical instruments we play (30 + and growing) we have developed a program specifically to introduce this living museum of World Music.

CCP is looking forward to collaborating with The Katz Family Foundation and the Young Einsteins (After Hours Academy) to bring this cultural experience to the Coastside community. With the Katz Family Foundation’s contribution, CCP is able to make this experience free to interested families. We are also looking forward to future collaborations with David Katz, of The Katz Family Foundation, and his programs focused on youth and tutoring.

About Coastside Children’s Programs:

Coastside Children’s Programs, a nonprofit agency, has been serving children and families from diverse multicultural and socio-economic backgrounds since 1975. CCP’s mission is to provide high quality care and enrichments for Coastside children. Our vision is that Coastside children have the character and tools to create a successful future in school and beyond.

We administer child care and development centers that provide quality educational, recreational and skill-building activities through two preschools (located in Montara and Half Moon Bay, CA), and three before and after school programs (located at Hatch Elementary School, El Granada Elementary School, and Farallone View Elementary School), as well as full-time activities during the summer. Our teachers create a fun, nurturing and safe environment for children to learn at their highest potential.

Apple-filled Crepes

1 cup milk
4 eggs
1 tablespoon melted butter
pinch salt
1 cup flour
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
pinch cinnamon
1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups apple juice
1⁄2 cup heavy cream

Blend the milk, eggs, butter and salt for 30 seconds. Add the flour, blend 30 seconds more, scrape down the sides, and mix for another half minute to make the batter. Refrigerate for two hours or more. Heat a skillet to medium and grill the pancakes for about 10 seconds each side. Stack on parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Saute the apple slices in butter with the brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla until the sugar melts. To make the sauce, reduce the apple juice to 1⁄2 cup, add the heavy cream and reduce further to 3⁄4 cup. Fold each crepe over some filling, top with sauce and dust with powdered sugar.
