The Annual Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival (PAFF) is known for its local music and eclectic art. Mark it on your calendar August 20-21.

South Coast residents celebrate the last hurrah of summer on the third weekend in August at PAFF.  This old-fashioned country fair showcases local music, eclectic art, and a wide array of food offerings; it’s the year’s biggest local event. The weekend kicks off on Friday evening with the opening reception gala of the South Coast Artist Alliance Art Show. Fine art, sculpture, mixed media, and more fill the IDES Grand Hall.

Camping: A healthy vacation for the whole family

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

by Liz Hamill

Want to take a vacation with your kids this summer that’s more than just fun — it’s also healthy, and cheap into the bargain? Take a break from the theme parks and hotels, and go on a family camping trip on the San Mateo County coast.

For families that don’t fear sleeping on the ground, tent camping can be a fabulous adventure. School-aged kids can set up and sleep in their own tent, making them feel more grown up and providing a modicum of privacy for their parents come nighttime. Tent camping runs cheaper than almost any other type of overnight excursion, and good tents can last for years even if they’re used often.

Cleaning for a Reason: San Mateo County residents find help

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

by Michele Lane

As part of my service, I try to find quality people to provide services for my clients. I came across this and thought it was a wonderful gift for someone who is dealing with chemotherapy.

I hope none of the people I work with will ever need this service but I am happy to share the information.

Cleaning for a Reason

If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning — once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment.

Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It’s our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.

You may not know someone going through chemo, but someone on your e-mail list might. Please forward! And to sign up for their newsletter follow this link.

Keep Your Pet Safe This Holiday Season

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

As I took a photo of one of my cats today, I was reminded as I’m preparing to start to decorate my tree tonight that we should “pet proof” our homes in the same way we “kid proof” them.

Whatever we use to decorate for the holidays, let’s think about whether that dried flower or artificial pine cone could harm our pet, if our pet chewed on it. There are usually a lot more wax candles around at holiday time and wax can make an animal sick. And the tree can be a huge problem.

Try to keep the ornaments that could be harmful high and out of reach. If you use an artificial tree, make sure your pets are not chewing on the branches. I read in the past that there is a bitter apple spray that can be used to help eliminate chewing.

Do you have any tips that have worked for you? Contact us. We would love to hear from you about ways you keep your pets safe.

Holiday Traditions Continue in Half Moon Bay

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

My Dad was a University Professor at Binghamton University and many times while I was growing up he had Grad Students from other countries working for him in his Lab at the University. When it came to major holidays, most notably Thanksgiving, but also Christmas, and Easter, my Dad made sure that his Grad Students (and grad students working for other professors in the department) had a place to go for the holidays, if they couldn’t travel home. When we didn’t travel to my grandparents for Thanksgiving we always had a grad student or two and their spouses at the table every year. It was part of who my Dad was always making sure that people had a place to go for the holidays and opening our home to visitors from overseas. It was a treasured part of my family’s holiday tradition.

My Wife and I have continued that tradition here on the Coastside. We make a point of inviting folks we know who are not having family over or going away to visit family to our home for major holidays. To us it is a key part of what the holiday is about, sharing it with others. Holidays are about being in community. It’s infectious; many of our friends have also adopted the tradition

Family Times on Thanksgiving Day

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Michael, Cheryl, Robert. Thanksgiving 2010.

I’ve been thinking this weekend about how important it is to have family times. My daughter and her family spent Thanksgiving day with us and after I posted the picture of Cheryl and her boys on facebook, I thought about all the people that don’t have family with them because of distance or worse, those who have passed on.

I realized after they left that we didn’t have our traditional discussion around the table about what we’re thankful for. I’m thankful that my grandsons have grown up to be healthy teenagers with a lot of potential for a good life ahead of them. I’m thankful that my daughter is still with me. We lost her cousin this year who was only 48 when she suffered a massive heart attack.

Hold your family close and make sure you stay in touch. If you are without biological family, create a family of friends to enjoy the holiday season. It has begun!

Would you like to share a Coastside family tradition? Do you ever host tree cutting parties at one of the Half Moon Bay tree farms? Many families are now developing traditions around helping those in need at this time of year. We invite you to be a guest blogger and share your stories. Send a short story and photo to info@coastviewsmag.com.
