Huck Finn Sportfishing is located at Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay. The California gray whales make a journey from their summer home in Alaska to the winter birthing areas in Baja. Seasonal trips are offered December to April. Other natural history and marine life cruises are available on request. A wide variety of marine life is abundant, including porpoise, humpback whales, tufted puffins, sea otters and albatross. Fishing trips are available, seasonally, targeting king salmon, rockfish and lingcod, and albacore.

December through May, experience the gray whale migration. May through October, see humpback whales, blue whales, pilot whales, killer whales, dolphins and porpoise. Salmon fishing takes place from late March to early November. Rockfish varies from year round to July through November, depending on regulation. Albacore and blue fin tuna are offshore mid July through October. Take a trip offshore bird watching.

Riptide offers customized half and full day tours for whale watching nature trips and to observe surfers off Mavericks. Humpback whales are seen in this area year-round and during the spring through fall, blue whales are sighted.

5 Beaches in San Mateo County For Watching Winter Waves

With the big rains and storms come big waves – some good places to watch in San Mateo County are:

Pacifica State Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in San Mateo County — easy access and other places to visit.

Mavericks — for over-the-top surf. Though really not a beach and not as easily accessible, it is the place to see big waves.

Half Moon Bay State Beaches include Francis Beach, Venice Beach and Dunes Beach. They all have separate parking areas and there is an entrance fee.

Montara State Beach is a popular beach for exploring tide pools and surf fishing.

Pescadero State Beach has a long shoreline with sandy coves, cliffs, tide pools, fishing and picnic facilities.
