Paula Dennis Remembers When …

La Honda Creations Craft Gallery opened in November of 1989 with Gwen O’Neill, then with Graphic Connections, moving in next door just a few months later. I helped her with some data input for a large graphic job she had, during the slow times at the gallery. Often my partner, Nancy Hewitt and I, would brainstorm about ways to get the word out about our little Gallery. After all, La Honda is more than a little out of the way. When Nancy and Gwen came up with the idea of a local paper we were very excited.
Gwen’s ability to put words on paper helped us to get our name out. Articles about local events and people made the paper more interesting. We started a monthly “meet the artist event” and Gwen would run an interview and article in Views From The Coast. Highlights of school events, music festivals and the people that live in the south coast area were the first topics. Opinion pieces started to come later. As the paper evolved, so did the name, to its current incarnation, CoastViews Magazine. La Honda Creations closed in 1999, but I’m glad to see that CoastViews has continued to serve the coast.
Early Personal Profiles

“India On a Motorcycle?” Magdalena McCann of La Honda joined her friend Bill Sheffield in an adventure to get them “off the beaten track and away from the overcrowded busses and trains in India.”
Judy Periat interviewed Pescadero resident Logan Payne about her early years as the child of a Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Embassy. She lived in Cairo, Iran, Taiwan and various cities in the U.S. Today Payne calls herself a “born-again Californian” with home being a definite place on the Pescadero coast.
And then there was the story about Toby McLeod’s five-month journey through Australia, Nepal, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Israel and England studying sacred sites. The three-year project was started with the help of Bill Moyers, who was “instrumental in helping Earth Image Films obtain $65,000 to develop the project.
Do you recall the recent article by Vicki Skinner in our May 2009 issue about Boomerang: Monthly audio magazine for kids? Imagine my delight when thumbing through the printed archives to find the first article we ever wrote about Dave Strohm, the creative force behind this unique business. It was in September 1992 that we wrote about Boomerang: Big ideas about life and current events for children.
We’ll recall a few more stories as well as important South Coast causes that we covered in the past. Until next post …

July 1992 — first anniversary issue
by Gwen O’Neill
Views from the South Coast began as a tabloid monthly newspaper with articles about personalities and businesses in La Honda, San Gregorio and Pescadero. As we began gathering support from local businesses, I created the first dummy and had a booth at the very first Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival in August of 1990.
Larry Trujillo, who was one of the original organizers of the festival, always reminds me of that first kick-off year for both organizations. At the 18th festival he remarked, “Can you believe it’s been 18 years?” And we just stood there, enjoying the music and exhibits shaking our heads.
Within a few years the name was changed to Views from the Coast in order to broaden the scope of articles to include the Half Moon Bay area.
One of the most rewarding things about my involvement has been the number of fascinating people I met along the way.
I remember the two women that would stop in a few times every year to say hello and tell me stories about the rich La Honda history, some of which were published. They had summer cottages and were involved with the life of the community for many years.
Some of their stories were about the pre-TV years. The whole community spent a lot of time with great inter-generational activities. There were regular dramatic and musical presentations at the Playbowl, a delightful open area surrounded by giant redwoods. In September 2009 I googled La Honda Playbowl and found Sean Dreilinger’s family photos taken at the Playbowl posted by flickr. The photos show the beauty and majesty of that area that is still used for community events.
