Mega-Gourd Dominates Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Weigh-Off

A 1,535-pound pumpkin has the starring role in this weekend’s Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

Ron Root has an all-consuming passion for pumpkins. Monster pumpkins, that is. Could anyone possibly have a better name to match their hobby? Root, 50, has been growing giants for only four years but his 1,535-pound Atlantic Giant squashed a formidable field of 60 heavyweight contenders from Washington, Oregon, Colorado and California to win today’s 37th annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, Calif. on a postcard-perfect morning in the World Pumpkin Capital.

Seed from a previous behemoth and specially-prepared soil combined with copious fertilizer, water and meticulous hand-pollination produced the champion mega-gourd grown by Root, 50, from Citrus Heights. He is the first California grower to win the Half Moon Bay weigh-off since 1999. Root pocketed $10,210 ($6 per pound plus another $1,000 special prize for the biggest pumpkin from California) plus a private screening of MEGAMIND, a 3-D animated comedy adventure coming to theaters nationwide on Nov. 5, for 200 of their friends, family and guests. It was Half Moon Bay’s deepest field ever with 14 pumpkins weighing in over 1,000 pounds.

The grand champion mega-gourd will be proudly displayed at the world-famous Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, this weekend (Oct. 16-17 —  Saturday and Sunday) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street in Half Moon Bay, Calif. Results follow:

Soup in a Pumpkin Bowl

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Is this photo just ho-hum? Why not try your favorite soup in a pumpkin bowl instead?

You will need to cook the soup in a pot as you normally would on the stove and then place it in the pumpkin for baking.

Depending on the size of the pumpkin, it will need about 2 hours to bake thoroughly. When you serve the soup, be sure to scrap some of the pumpkin along with the rest of the ingredients. Pumpkin is packed with a lot of good nutrition so it adds a lot of dietary benefit with few added calories.

Pumpkin Pasta

From The Top One Hundred Pasta Sauces by Diane Seed; Ten Speed Press

1 pound tagliolini or fine fresh pasta

3 pounds of pumpkin

4 tablespoons of butter

1 leek

1 stick celery

chicken stock

salt and black pepper

gtrated nutmeg

2/3 cup heavy cream

1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Melt half the butter and add the finely chopped leek and celery. Peel the pumpkin and remove the seeds and any stringy fibres. Cut the pumpkin into thin slices. Add to the leek and celery and stir for a few minutes.

Now add a little stock and cover. Cook for about 20 minutes, adding more stock from time to time if necessary to keep moist. Check the seasoning and add salt, freshly ground black pepper and nutmeg to taste.

Process the sauce in a blender or food processor. Return to the pan and keep warm. Cook the pasta carefully and avoid overcooking. Fresh pasta will only need a few minutes, so add the cream to the sauce as soon as you have thrown the pasta into the boiling water.

Drain the pasta and place in a heated dish. Stir in the freshly grated cheese and then the pumpkin sauce. Mix well, add the rest of the butter and serve at once.

Memories — Yearly Trips to Half Moon Bay and San Gregorio Pumpkin Farms

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

We enjoy visiting the Half Moon Bay Coastside every year. When our boys were younger we would make several stops at pumpkin farms between Half Moon Bay and Pescadero with our favorite stop at Muzzi’s Ranch Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze in San Gregorio. We have great photos from the past of the boys jumping off the hay piles and running through the maze.

Now that they are teenagers, we normally stop at one farm to pick a few and then head down to our favorite spot for lunch in Pescadero. We always see old friends at Duartes Tavern, especially if we remember to e-mail a few to let them know we’ll be in town.

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Weigh Off Update: New bonus mega-prize for new world record

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Monday, Oct. 11, 2010 — 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

735 Main St., Half Moon Bay, Calif.

Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Superstar Gourd Growing Greats and their hard-to-believe, titanic orange orbs gather on Monday, Oct. 11 for the 37th Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off — in the World Pumpkin Capital of Half Moon Bay, California. This year, for the first time, a $5,000 bonus mega-prize will be awarded to any grower that breaks the world record at Half Moon Bay — considered the “Super Bowl of Weigh-Offs.” A host of accomplished, grizzled veteran growers will be contending for the coveted title, the $5,000 world record prize and $20,000 in additional prize money. In a pay-by-the-pound system, the winner will take home a hefty $6 per pound for the champion mega-pumpkin. Defending champion Don Young, of Des Moines IA, obliterated the competition at last year’s weigh-off with his burly 1,658-pound “Monster from the Midway.” Beauty will share center stage with beefy brawn — a special $500 prize will be awarded to the “most beautiful pumpkin” judged by the audience based on color, shape and size. The grand champion mega-gourd (along with the top five overall) will be on display at the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 16-17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street.
