Flying into Half Moon Bay Airport and Flying with a Service Dog

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

by Sue Ballew

Half Moon Bay Airport is one of the most popular airports among pilots in the Bay Area. It sits on the other side of the hilly terrain south of San Francisco, along side the ocean at the Half Moon Bay Harbor. It originated as a military airport and many people are surprised to learn of its existence.

On any given good weather weekend in the Bay Area, pilots come in numbers to fly along the beautiful, rugged coast, practice a couple of landings, or park at the South end of the airport and walk into town. They like to sample the great restaurants for lunch or do a little local shopping. It feels like you are really getting away from the city when you fly into Half Moon Bay Airport.

Flying with a Service Dog

Hans and his wife Betsy have been passionate and enthusiastic pilots for many years. They own a Cherokee and also Hans favorite, a motor glider, both based at Palo Alto Airport. The controls have been converted so he can fly with his hands only. (I am sure for many of you that are rudder challenged, you probably wonder why all airplanes aren’t rigged this way).

Recently Hans got a service dog, Rilla, who now goes everywhere with him and is his flying companion. If you feel like I do about my dog, what a great thing to be able to take your dog everywhere, especially flying. I hope she likes Mutt Muffs, those cute ear protectors for dogs.

5 Beaches in San Mateo County For Watching Winter Waves

Monday, December 20th, 2010

With the big rains and storms come big waves – some good places to watch in San Mateo County are:

Pacifica State Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in San Mateo County — easy access and other places to visit.

Mavericks — for over-the-top surf. Though really not a beach and not as easily accessible, it is the place to see big waves.

Half Moon Bay State Beaches include Francis Beach, Venice Beach and Dunes Beach. They all have separate parking areas and there is an entrance fee.

Montara State Beach is a popular beach for exploring tide pools and surf fishing.

Pescadero State Beach has a long shoreline with sandy coves, cliffs, tide pools, fishing and picnic facilities.

Salmon with Red Wine sauce from Casey’s Cafe in Half Moon Bay

Casey'sCafe_CGFA08

Serves 4

4 salmon filets, 7 ounces each (cut your own or buy pre-cut)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper

1 thyme sprig

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

2 cups rich port

2 tablespoons heavy cream

5 tablespoons butter, cut into 5 pieces

coarse salt and white pepper

1/3 cup minced leeks

fresh marjoram or dill for garnish

If cutting your own salmon, purchase a filet and remove skin. Slice the filet across about 1 3/4 inches wide, set aside until all pieces are cut. Carefully cut the filet piece down the center almost to the bottom,

but do not cut through. Separate the two pieces and flatten out to create a nicely shaped salmon filet about 7/8thick.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in wide, deep sauté pan over medium heat. Add cracked pepper and thyme, sauté for 4 minutes. Add vinegar and port — raise the heat and bring to a boil until there is only a 1/2 cup left (approx. 8-9 min.).  Remove pan from heat and whisk in cream, then the butter 1 piece at a time. Pour the sauce through a fine mesh sieve, discard solids. Season sauce with salt and white pepper, cover and keep warm.

Put remaining tablespoon of oil in wide sauté pan, set over medium heat, put in leeks. Season both sides of salmon with salt and pepper. Cook salmon until lightly browned, about 2 to 3 minutes. Turn over and cook another 2 to 3 minutes. Salmon should be lightly underdone in center, do not over cook. Arrange filet on dinner plate and drizzle a tablespoon or 2 of sauce over salmon. Garnish with fresh marjoram or dill.
