Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association presents the eighth annual Wine & Crab Taste-Off! Four of the finest local restaurants will be battling it out in hopes of being names “Crab Cook 2011.” We need your help to make the decision, so come and judge for yourself!

All four restaurants will be preparing two crab dishes to satisfy your appetite. For $49, we welcome you to take on the challenge of “consumer judge.” Taste food and wine at two restaurants of your choice, and let us know what you think. All ballots will be tallied to determine the “Consumers Choice Awards” as well as scores from professional judges for the “Judges Choice Awards.” For an additional $16, you can visit another restaurant of your choice. Restaurants are still to be determined but will let you know as soon as they are finalized.

Regional Open Spaces Near Half Moon Bay

Monday, November 29th, 2010

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space district acquires, protects and preserves many wonderful areas here in Northern California. Their mission is to preserve a regional greenbelt of open space land in perpetuity and provide opportunities for public enjoyment and education.

Overlooking Half Moon Bay is the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve located on the western hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Purisima Creek Canyon has towering redwoods, a rushing creek and understory of ferns, berries and wildflowers. There are wonderful views of the coast and Half Moon Bay from the northern part of the preserve.

There are 21 miles of developed trails and logging roads that allow for easy walks or long, strenuous hikes or rides. The Redwood Trail is accessible for people of all physical abilities with wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and a restroom on this flat, easy route. It is located just off Skyline Boulevard.

Information and directions to the various trailheads of Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve are available along with a downloadable map.

A popular beach with locals and visitors, it is a excellent spot for surf fishing and tide pool exploration. There are hills to the north and south creating a beautiful backdrop.

Nearby is Point Montara, a lighthouse that offers overnight accommodations. It is operated by Hostelling International, a non-profit group.

Montara mountain is also called McNee Ranch and is part of Montara State Beach. The mountain is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains and features the only undisturbed Coastal Mountain Habitat found in over 100 miles of coastline.

The beach is in San Mateo County, approximately 20 miles south of San Francisco and eight miles north of Half Moon Bay on Highway One.
